When to Visit
Muscat has one of the most extreme climates of any major city — summers (Jun–Sep) reach 45°C+ and are genuinely dangerous outdoors. The optimal window is October–April, with January–February being the most comfortable. Even in winter, midday temperatures reach 26–30°C.

Experiences
The best experiences in Muscat — from iconic landmarks to local favourites, ranked by what travellers love most.
One of the most beautiful mosques in the world — the main prayer hall has the second-largest hand-woven carpet on earth (4,343 sq m, 600 women, 4 years), a 14-tonne Swarovski chandelier, and marble work of extraordinary precision. Open to non-Muslims Saturday–Thursday before noon.
Oman's oldest covered market — frankincense in a dozen varieties, hand-beaten silver Khanjar daggers, Bedouin jewellery, and rose water. Authentic commerce unchanged for centuries, without the tourist tat of Dubai Gold Souk.
A 3-hour drive from Muscat — a canyon of turquoise rock pools and waterfalls reached by boat crossing then a 2km canyon walk. Swimming through a cave to reach a hidden waterfall is the payoff. One of Arabia's most spectacular natural sites.
The 500-year-old mud-brick citadel of Nizwa (2hrs from Muscat) has a massive cylindrical tower with views over the date palm oasis. The Friday goat market beside it is one of Arabia's great traditional gatherings.
A turquoise swimming hole formed where the desert meets the sea — a perfectly circular 40m-wide collapse of limestone filled with brackish water. Locals swim here; it's genuinely extraordinary and entirely free.
Spend a night in the Wahiba Sands — orange dunes reaching 100m high, camel trekking at sunset, and a Bedouin camp dinner under Oman's dark-sky stars. 2.5 hours from Muscat, often combined with Wadi Bani Khalid.

Accommodation
Pick your area first — each neighbourhood has a completely different price point and vibe.
Mutrah
Historic & Authentic
Muscat's ancient commercial heart — the Ottoman-era Corniche promenade, the covered souq where frankincense has been traded for millennia, Mutrah Fort on the headland, and a working fishing harbour that functions exactly as it has for centuries. The most authentic neighbourhood in the capital.
Qurum & Al Khuwair
Comfortable & Modern
Modern residential Muscat with the best public beach, Qurum Natural Park, the Oman Avenues Mall, and the greatest concentration of mid-range restaurants and cafes. Where expats and professional Omanis live — a comfortable, tree-lined alternative to the old city.
Shatti Al Qurum & Al Mouj
Luxury & Coastal
Upscale coastal Muscat — the Al Mouj marina and golf club, luxury villa compounds, the finest beach hotels, and the most expensive dining scene in the country. Where the 5-star resorts cluster along the Muscat coast.

Dining
From street food to fine dining — the dishes you must try and the restaurants locals actually go to.
Start with simple local restaurants around Mutrah Souq & Corniche; the best meals are usually regional staples rather than generic tourist menus.
A relaxed break between sightseeing stops, useful for planning the next leg and escaping midday heat or rain.
Choose one dinner with a view, heritage setting, or standout regional kitchen to anchor the trip.
Transport
Base yourself near Mutrah Souq & Corniche if you only have 1-2 days.
Use autos or app cabs for short hops where available; agree prices before starting if rides are not metered.
Hire a local driver for spread-out sights or day trips.
Start outdoor sightseeing early for better light, lower heat, and fewer crowds.
Keep cash for small entries, parking, local snacks, and places without reliable card payments.
Insider Knowledge
Prioritise Mutrah Souq (frankincense & silver) early in the day before crowds build.
Pair Mutrah Corniche evening walk with nearby food stops instead of crossing the city repeatedly.
Check weekly closures and festival dates before locking the itinerary.
Carry a light layer, sun protection, and water; Indian travel days often run longer than expected.
Book peak-season accommodation ahead, especially around long weekends and school holidays.
