The Eternal City
The oldest continuously inhabited city on earth — pilgrims bathing in the sacred Ganges at dawn, the great Ganga Aarti fire ceremony blazing every evening, funeral pyres burning through the night, and 3,000 years of spiritual life concentrated in 84 ghats along a river bend.

When to Visit
Varanasi is best October–March when the city is cool, dry, and the ghats are bustling. Dev Deepawali (November) — 1 million lamps lit on the ghats for Kartik Purnima — is the single most spectacular event in India. Summers are extremely hot; monsoon floods the lower ghats but has its own drama.

Experiences
The best experiences in Varanasi — from iconic landmarks to local favourites, ranked by what travellers love most.
Every evening at sunset, seven priests perform a synchronised fire ritual on the main ghat — brass lamps, conch shells, incense, and chanting that builds to a crescendo. Watch from a rowing boat on the river for the full panoramic view. The most powerful ceremony in India.
The dawn boat ride past all 84 ghats — pilgrims bathing in the mist, dhobis slapping laundry on stone, sadhus meditating, and the sun rising over the eastern bank (which remains undeveloped). The most profound 90 minutes in Indian travel.
One of the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas of Shiva — rebuilt by Maratha queen Ahilyabai Holkar in 1780, expanded by PM Modi in 2021 with a dramatic corridor connecting it to the Ganges. Massive queues for darshan; the new Vishwanath Dham corridor has improved access significantly.
The holiest cremation site in Hinduism — pyres burn 24 hours a day, every day of the year, as Hindus believe dying here guarantees moksha (liberation from rebirth). Observe respectfully from the ghat steps or passing boat. Photography is strictly prohibited.
Just 10km from Varanasi — the site where Gautama Buddha delivered his first sermon after enlightenment in 528 BCE. The Dhamek Stupa (5th century) is intact; the Sarnath Museum houses the original Ashoka Lion Capital (now India's national emblem).
Varanasi is India's silk weaving capital — the Banarasi brocade saree with gold and silver threads is woven in home workshops in Lohta and Lallapura. The Old City food: thandai (milk, rose, sometimes bhang), malaiyo (seasonal winter dessert), and the best kachori-sabzi breakfast in India.

Dashashwamedh & Central Ghats
Sacred & Intense
The spiritual centre of Varanasi — the main ghat where the Ganga Aarti blazes every evening, Manikarnika's perpetual cremation fires 200m to the north, and the dense old-city lanes leading to Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Overwhelming, profound, and the non-negotiable core of any Varanasi visit.
Assi Ghat & Lanka
Relaxed & Bohemian
The backpacker and academic end of Varanasi — Banaras Hindu University is nearby, the ghat has its own smaller aarti, and the Lanka road area has the best rooftop cafes, Western-friendly restaurants, and guesthouses. Less intense than the central ghats but still authentic.
Sarnath & North Varanasi
Serene & Historic
The Buddhist pilgrimage site 10km north — the Dhamek Stupa where Buddha first taught, the Sarnath Museum with the Ashoka Lion Capital (original, not a replica), and the cluster of Thai, Japanese, Chinese, and Tibetan Buddhist temples each representing their home country's architecture.

Dining
From street food to fine dining — the dishes you must try and the restaurants locals actually go to.
Start with simple local restaurants around Dashashwamedh Ghat; the best meals are usually regional staples rather than generic tourist menus.
A relaxed break between sightseeing stops, useful for planning the next leg and escaping midday heat or rain.
Choose one dinner with a view, heritage setting, or standout regional kitchen to anchor the trip.
Transport
Base yourself near Dashashwamedh Ghat if you only have 1-2 days.
Use autos or app cabs for short hops where available; agree prices before starting if rides are not metered.
Hire a local driver for spread-out sights or day trips.
Start outdoor sightseeing early for better light, lower heat, and fewer crowds.
Keep cash for small entries, parking, local snacks, and places without reliable card payments.
Insider Knowledge
Prioritise Ganga Aarti ceremony (7pm) early in the day before crowds build.
Pair Rowing boat at sunrise with nearby food stops instead of crossing the city repeatedly.
Check weekly closures and festival dates before locking the itinerary.
Carry a light layer, sun protection, and water; Indian travel days often run longer than expected.
Book peak-season accommodation ahead, especially around long weekends and school holidays.
