Things to do in Muscat in June

1

Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque

One of the most beautiful mosques in the world — the main prayer hall has the second-largest hand-woven carpet on earth (4,343 sq m, 600 women, 4 years), a 14-tonne Swarovski chandelier, and marble work of extraordinary precision. Open to non-Muslims Saturday–Thursday before noon.

2

Mutrah Souq

Oman's oldest covered market — frankincense in a dozen varieties, hand-beaten silver Khanjar daggers, Bedouin jewellery, and rose water. Authentic commerce unchanged for centuries, without the tourist tat of Dubai Gold Souk.

3

Wadi Shab

A 3-hour drive from Muscat — a canyon of turquoise rock pools and waterfalls reached by boat crossing then a 2km canyon walk. Swimming through a cave to reach a hidden waterfall is the payoff. One of Arabia's most spectacular natural sites.

4

Nizwa Fort & Souq Day Trip

The 500-year-old mud-brick citadel of Nizwa (2hrs from Muscat) has a massive cylindrical tower with views over the date palm oasis. The Friday goat market beside it is one of Arabia's great traditional gatherings.

5

Bimmah Sinkhole

A turquoise swimming hole formed where the desert meets the sea — a perfectly circular 40m-wide collapse of limestone filled with brackish water. Locals swim here; it's genuinely extraordinary and entirely free.

6

Al Wahiba Sands Desert Camp

Spend a night in the Wahiba Sands — orange dunes reaching 100m high, camel trekking at sunset, and a Bedouin camp dinner under Oman's dark-sky stars. 2.5 hours from Muscat, often combined with Wadi Bani Khalid.
