Oman
Oman is the Arabian Peninsula's most authentic travel secret — a sultanate of dramatic wadis, ancient forts, blue-domed mosques in Muscat, the vermilion dunes of Wahiba Sands, and frankincense markets that have been trading since before recorded history.

What to Do in Oman
Iconic activities and unmissable experiences across all destinations
Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque
One of the most beautiful mosques in the world — the main prayer hall has the second-largest hand-woven carpet on earth (4,343 sq m, 600 women, 4 years), a 14-tonne Swarovski chandelier, and marble work of extraordinary precision. Open to non-Muslims Saturday–Thursday before noon.
Mutrah Souq
Oman's oldest covered market — frankincense in a dozen varieties, hand-beaten silver Khanjar daggers, Bedouin jewellery, and rose water. Authentic commerce unchanged for centuries, without the tourist tat of Dubai Gold Souk.
Wadi Shab
A 3-hour drive from Muscat — a canyon of turquoise rock pools and waterfalls reached by boat crossing then a 2km canyon walk. Swimming through a cave to reach a hidden waterfall is the payoff. One of Arabia's most spectacular natural sites.

How Much Does Oman Cost?
Daily budget estimates — accommodation, food, transport, and activities

🎟️ Activities
$10–20 (mosque free, Mutrah Souq free, Bimmah free)
Oman is less budget-friendly than South or Southeast Asia but local Omani biryani restaurants cost $3–5 per meal. Uber works well in Muscat. The Grand Mosque is free to visit (dress modestly).

$100–$180/day
🛏️ Hotel
$60–110 (3–4 star hotel near Qurum or Mutrah)
🍜 Food
$30–55 (good restaurants, Mutrah seafood)
🚌 Transport
$25–40 (rental car is best — $30–40/day)
🎟️ Activities
$50–80 (Wadi Shab day trip, Nizwa tour)
Renting a car is the single best upgrade in Muscat — wadis and forts are spread out and taxis add up. International licence accepted. Wadi Shab tours cost $40–60 per person through agencies.
Luxury
$250–$600/day
🛏️ Hotel
$180–450 (Al Bustan Palace, Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah, The Chedi)
🍜 Food
$80–150 (The Beach restaurant at Chedi, fine dining)
🚌 Transport
$60–100 (private car, hotel transfers)
🎟️ Activities
$150–350 (private dhow sunset cruise, helicopter to wadis, desert camp)
The Chedi Muscat is Oman's finest luxury hotel — a minimalist masterpiece with 100m pool, private beach, and the best sunset views in the city. Al Bustan Palace (IHG) is a converted royal guesthouse.
Prices in USD. Oman is more expensive than UAE neighbours for some things (fuel is cheap, alcohol is expensive, hotels are mid-range). Street food and local restaurants are excellent value.
