City of Lanterns & Silk
The world's most photogenic small town — a 15th-century merchant port where Japanese merchant houses, Chinese clan temples, and French colonial shopfronts line a river perfumed with incense and illuminated nightly by a thousand silk lanterns. A UNESCO World Heritage town of extraordinary beauty.

When to Visit
Hoi An's weather is shaped by Central Vietnam's climate — a dry, sunny season from February to August (best time) and a wet season from September to January when October–November flooding can close parts of the Ancient Town.

Experiences
The best experiences in Hoi An — from iconic landmarks to local favourites, ranked by what travellers love most.
Hoi An's Ancient Town is most magical after 5pm when lanterns are lit and cars are banned. Walk the Japanese Covered Bridge (1593), the Fujian Assembly Hall, riverside promenade, and An Hoi Island where coloured silk lanterns are sold from floating boats.
Hoi An has the most distinctive food in Vietnam. Cao lau (a noodle dish made only with water from the town's ancient well), White Rose dumplings (Banh Vac), and the Banh Mi sandwich perfected at Banh Mi Phuong — called the world's best by Anthony Bourdain.
Hoi An has over 400 tailors who can produce a bespoke suit, ao dai, or dress in 24–48 hours at a fraction of Western prices. Yaly Couture and A Dong Silk are the most reputable. Order early in your stay for fitting time.
5km from the Ancient Town, the Cam Thanh coconut palm forest is explored on traditional round wicker basket boats — the boatman spins the coracle with astonishing skill. Crab fishing, folk music, and a coconut wine tasting round out the 2-hour experience.
40km west of Hoi An, My Son is a UNESCO World Heritage cluster of 4th–14th century Cham Hindu temples — the greatest monument of the Cham civilisation. Best visited early (8am) before tour groups arrive and the heat builds.
Hoi An cooking classes consistently rank among the best in Southeast Asia — most start with a guided Thu Bon Market walk to select fresh ingredients, then teach cao lau, white rose, and Vietnamese crepes (banh xeo) in riverside kitchens.

Accommodation
Pick your area first — each neighbourhood has a completely different price point and vibe.
Ancient Town (UNESCO Zone)
Magical & Atmospheric
The 1km-wide pedestrian historic core — ochre yellow walls, wooden merchant houses, Chinese clan temples, and the Japanese Covered Bridge. Entry tickets (₫120,000) give access to 5 heritage sites. Most beautiful between 5pm and 9pm when lanterns are lit and the river glows.
An Bang Beach
Relaxed & Sunny
5km northeast of the Ancient Town, An Bang is Hoi An's best beach — a 3km strip of sand with excellent beachside restaurants (the Mango Rooms and Soul Kitchen), consistent waves for surfing, and a dramatically less crowded alternative to Da Nang's tourist beaches.
Cam Thanh Coconut Village
Rural & Authentic
The river delta 5km south of the Ancient Town — dense coconut palm forest laced with water channels, traditional fishing villages, and the basket boat experience that has become one of Hoi An's most beloved activities. A completely different side of the Hoi An experience, accessible only by boat or bicycle.

Dining
From street food to fine dining — the dishes you must try and the restaurants locals actually go to.
Start with simple local restaurants around Ancient Town; the best meals are usually regional staples rather than generic tourist menus.
A relaxed break between sightseeing stops, useful for planning the next leg and escaping midday heat or rain.
Choose one dinner with a view, heritage setting, or standout regional kitchen to anchor the trip.
Transport
Base yourself near Ancient Town if you only have 1-2 days.
Use autos or app cabs for short hops where available; agree prices before starting if rides are not metered.
Hire a local driver for spread-out sights or day trips.
Start outdoor sightseeing early for better light, lower heat, and fewer crowds.
Keep cash for small entries, parking, local snacks, and places without reliable card payments.
Insider Knowledge
Prioritise Japanese Covered Bridge (1593) early in the day before crowds build.
Pair Tan Ky Old House with nearby food stops instead of crossing the city repeatedly.
Check weekly closures and festival dates before locking the itinerary.
Carry a light layer, sun protection, and water; Indian travel days often run longer than expected.
Book peak-season accommodation ahead, especially around long weekends and school holidays.
