Santorini is the most photographed island in the world and possibly the most divisive. People who love it are moved to tears by the caldera sunset. People who hate it point out that in July, Oia is so crowded you cannot actually see the sunset behind the wall of selfie sticks. Both experiences are real, and which one you have depends entirely on when you go and how you plan.
Is Santorini Worth It?
Yes — if you go in May, June, or September. No — if you go in July or August. The island is genuinely extraordinary: the caldera views, the volcanic black sand beaches, the wine made from vines grown on volcanic rock. But peak season transforms Oia into a Disney queue. Off-peak, it transforms back into one of Europe's most beautiful places.

Where to Stay in Santorini
- ›Oia: The famous blue domes and sunset views. Most expensive. Book cave houses 3–6 months ahead for peak season.
- ›Fira: The capital, most convenient for ferry port, cheaper than Oia, good nightlife.
- ›Imerovigli: The "Balcony of the Aegean." Quieter than Oia, equally stunning caldera views.
- ›Perissa/Perivolos: Black sand beach villages on the other side of the island. Much cheaper, better for beach holidays.
- ›Pyrgos: Inland village, authentic, best for food and castle views. Cheapest accommodation.
The sunset from Oia is legendary but you need to claim a spot on the castle walls by 5pm (sunset is ~8:30pm in summer). Or: watch from the lighthouse at Akrotiri (south of the island) — same sunset, almost no crowds, free.
