Cradle of Civilization
The Acropolis at dawn, cold Mythos beer on a rooftop with the Parthenon glowing above — Athens is simultaneously ancient and alive, chaotic and beautiful.

When to Visit
Athens is best April–June and September–October — warm enough for the Acropolis but before the 40°C summer heat. July–August is ferociously hot and crowded. Winter is mild by European standards but many island connections close.

Experiences
The best experiences in Athens — from iconic landmarks to local favourites, ranked by what travellers love most.
Book the first ticket slot (8am) and climb the Acropolis before the heat and crowds arrive. The Parthenon in morning light is one of the great experiences in world travel.
One of Europe's finest museums, built directly above archaeological remains — the Parthenon Gallery on the top floor shows the surviving frieze with views of the actual hill through floor-to-ceiling glass.
Souvlaki at Thanasis in Monastiraki, spanakopita from a bakery, loukoumades (honey doughnuts), and Greek coffee at a traditional kafeneion — Athens feeds you well for almost nothing.
The Temple of Poseidon at the edge of the Attica peninsula, where Byron carved his name. The sunset over the Aegean from the clifftop temple is extraordinary.
The finest collection of ancient Greek artefacts in the world — the Antikythera Mechanism, the Mask of Agamemnon, and countless objects that reframe everything you thought you knew about antiquity.

Accommodation
Pick your area first — each neighbourhood has a completely different price point and vibe.
Plaka & Monastiraki
Ancient & Lively
Athens' most charming old neighbourhood — winding lanes below the Acropolis, Byzantine churches, the ancient Agora, the flea market, and souvlaki restaurants that have been feeding locals for generations. The tourist zone but justifiably loved.
Koukaki & Makrygianni
Local & Convenient
The residential neighbourhood directly below the Acropolis — local coffee shops, affordable restaurants, and the Acropolis Museum on the doorstep. The best neighbourhood for visitors who want value and proximity to the sights without Plaka's tourist pricing.
Exarcheia
Bohemian & Raw
Athens' anarchist neighbourhood — left-wing bookshops, alternative bars, excellent cheap food, and the National Archaeological Museum on its edge. Gritty, creative, and completely genuine. Not for everyone, but the most interesting neighbourhood in Athens for those who seek it out.

Dining
From street food to fine dining — the dishes you must try and the restaurants locals actually go to.
Start with simple local restaurants around Acropolis & Plaka; the best meals are usually regional staples rather than generic tourist menus.
A relaxed break between sightseeing stops, useful for planning the next leg and escaping midday heat or rain.
Choose one dinner with a view, heritage setting, or standout regional kitchen to anchor the trip.
Transport
Base yourself near Acropolis & Plaka if you only have 1-2 days.
Use autos or app cabs for short hops where available; agree prices before starting if rides are not metered.
Hire a local driver for spread-out sights or day trips.
Start outdoor sightseeing early for better light, lower heat, and fewer crowds.
Keep cash for small entries, parking, local snacks, and places without reliable card payments.
Insider Knowledge
Prioritise Acropolis & Parthenon early in the day before crowds build.
Pair Acropolis Museum with nearby food stops instead of crossing the city repeatedly.
Check weekly closures and festival dates before locking the itinerary.
Carry a light layer, sun protection, and water; Indian travel days often run longer than expected.
Book peak-season accommodation ahead, especially around long weekends and school holidays.
