Indian passport holders who used to get into the UAE on the strength of a UK visa or UK residence permit can no longer do so. Reporting this month confirms the UAE has quietly tightened its visa-on-arrival eligibility list, and a document that worked for years is now off it.
What happened
The UAE's visa-on-arrival facility for Indian nationals has never worked off the Indian passport alone — travellers also needed a valid visa, residence permit or US Green Card from a UAE-approved country. Until recently, that approved list included the United Kingdom. Reporting in early July states that UK-issued visas and residence permits have been removed from the eligible list, meaning Indian travellers who hold only a UK visa or UK residence permit must now apply for a UAE visa in advance rather than expecting to be stamped in on arrival.
The current list of countries whose valid visa, residence permit or Green Card still qualifies an Indian passport holder for visa-on-arrival includes the United States, European Union member states, Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore and South Korea — a list that was itself expanded in February 2025 to add Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore and South Korea.
Why it matters
This is a real, practical trap for a specific group of travellers: Indians based in or holding valid UK visas — including work visas, visit visas, or leave-to-remain documents — who assumed they could route through Dubai or Abu Dhabi visa-free the way US or Schengen visa holders can. That assumption no longer holds. Anyone in this bracket now needs to apply for a UAE tourist visa in advance, the same as an Indian traveller with no qualifying foreign document at all.
