Sri Lanka Travel Guide 2025: The Island That Has Everything

Ancient cities, hill country tea, surf beaches, leopards, and the most welcoming people in Asia. Sri Lanka delivers more per square kilometre than almost anywhere.

Sri Lanka is the destination that surprises everyone who goes. Visitors expect a tropical beach holiday and instead find UNESCO World Heritage ancient cities, leopard safaris that rival East Africa, hill country train journeys through tea plantations that are among Asia's most beautiful, colonial history, and a food culture that has been quietly influencing British cooking for decades.

What is the best time to visit Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka has two monsoon seasons affecting different coasts. West coast (Colombo, Galle, Ella): best December–March. East coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay): best May–September. For a complete island circuit, visit between December and March when the west and cultural triangle are at their best.

How do I get around Sri Lanka?

Trains are scenic and cheap — the Colombo–Ella hill country route is one of the world's most beautiful train journeys (₹120–300 one-way). Tuk-tuks are everywhere for short hops. For flexibility, rent a scooter or hire a car with driver (₹4,000–6,000/day). Buses are the cheapest option for long distances.

Is Sri Lanka expensive for Indian tourists?

Sri Lanka is very affordable for Indian tourists. Budget travel costs ₹1,500–3,000/day (guesthouse, local rice and curry meals, buses). Mid-range with a boutique hotel and restaurant meals runs ₹4,000–7,000/day. The Sri Lankan rupee gives Indian rupees strong purchasing power.
