Shimla Trip Guide 2025: Best Time, Things to Do & Getting There

The former summer capital of British India at 2,200 metres — toy train, apple orchards, Mall Road walks and Himalayan views. Everything you need to plan your Shimla trip.

Shimla was the summer capital of British India — and it is easy to see why. At 2,200 metres in the Himalayan foothills, the British built a replica of England in the mountains: Christ Church, the Gaiety Theatre, Tudor-style buildings, and a pedestrian promenade called Mall Road that could have been lifted from a Cotswolds town and dropped into a pine forest.

Built in 1903, the train winds through 102 tunnels and 864 bridges, climbing from Kalka at 656 metres to Shimla at 2,206 metres in 96 kilometres. The 5-hour journey through pine forests and Himalayan foothills is genuinely spectacular.

  • Cost: ₹195 (general) to ₹395 (first class). Book on IRCTC website.
  • Pro tip: Sit on the left side of the train travelling Kalka → Shimla for the best views.
