Rajasthan 7-Day Itinerary: The Golden Triangle + Desert Circuit

Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Udaipur in 7 days. The definitive Rajasthan road trip — forts, palaces, desert safaris and India's most photogenic cities.

Rajasthan is India at its most spectacular. Majestic forts rising from desert plains, palaces built on lakes, camels silhouetted against Thar Desert sunsets, and streets dyed the colours of the Rainbow — pink, blue, gold. This 7-day itinerary covers the four cities that no first-time Rajasthan visitor should miss, with the right amount of time in each.

The Route: Why This Sequence Works

Delhi → Jaipur → Jodhpur → Jaisalmer → Udaipur → fly/train home. This clockwise circuit avoids backtracking, keeps travel distances manageable, and saves the most romantic city (Udaipur) for last — a perfect way to end the trip.

Day 1–2: Jaipur — The Pink City

  • Day 1 morning: Amber Fort — arrive by 8am before tour groups. Take the elephant or jeep up, walk down.
  • Day 1 afternoon: Hawa Mahal exterior photo, City Palace Museum, Jantar Mantar observatory.
  • Day 1 evening: Nahargarh Fort at sunset for the best city panorama. Dinner at Laxmi Misthan Bhandar for traditional thali.
  • Day 2 morning: Jaipur gem market (Johari Bazaar) — buy direct from dealers, bring your receipt.
  • Day 2 afternoon: Travel to Jodhpur (5 hours by train or 6 hours by car). The Mandore Express leaves at 6am for a comfortable morning arrival.

Day 3: Jodhpur — The Blue City

  • Morning: Mehrangarh Fort — India's most imposing fort, 150-metre walls above a sea of blue houses. Spend 3 hours minimum.
  • Afternoon: Jaswant Thada (marble cenotaph), Stepwell Toor Ji Ka Jhalra, old city lanes.
  • Evening: Rooftop cafe dinner with fort views. Try Indique or On the Rocks.
  • Sunset: Kailana Lake for silhouette shots of the fort.

Mehrangarh Fort at sunrise is one of India's greatest photography opportunities. The blue city of Jodhpur glows against a pink sky below. Set your alarm for 6am.

Day 4–5: Jaisalmer — The Golden City

  • Day 4: Travel from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer (6 hours by train — take the overnight Jodhpur-Jaisalmer Express).
  • Day 4 evening: Walk Jaisalmer Fort — the only living fort in India, with 3,000 residents inside.
  • Day 5 morning: Desert safari to Sam Sand Dunes or Khuri. Book through hotel rather than touts. Sunrise camel ride.
  • Day 5 afternoon: Patwon Ki Haveli, Nathmal Ki Haveli (intricate sandstone carvings), sunset at Gadisar Lake.

Day 6–7: Udaipur — The City of Lakes

The 6-hour bus or 7-hour train from Jaisalmer delivers you to what many consider India's most romantic city. The Lake Palace hotel floating on Lake Pichola, the City Palace complex rising above it, rooftop restaurants with sunset lake views — Udaipur earns its reputation.

  • Day 6: City Palace (3 hours), sunset boat ride on Lake Pichola (1.5 hours), Gangaur Ghat, Bagore Ki Haveli puppet show at 7pm.
  • Day 7: Saheliyon Ki Bari garden, Fateh Sagar Lake promenade, Monsoon Palace for panoramic views, fly home from Udaipur airport.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time to visit Rajasthan?

October to March is the best time — cool days (15–25°C), clear skies, and all the major festivals (Pushkar Fair in November, Desert Festival in February). April to June is extremely hot (45°C+). Monsoon (July–September) is surprisingly green and less crowded but some forts close.

Is 7 days enough for Rajasthan?

Seven days covers the Golden Triangle extension (Delhi–Jaipur–Agra) plus Jodhpur and Udaipur comfortably. For a fuller experience including Jaisalmer and Pushkar, plan 10–12 days. Rajasthan rewards slow travel — don't try to rush through it.

How do I get around Rajasthan?

Trains are the best way to travel between major cities (Jaipur–Jodhpur: 6 hrs, Jodhpur–Jaisalmer: 5 hrs). Private car with driver (₹2,500–3,500/day) is popular and convenient for smaller towns. RSRTC buses are cheap but slower. Book trains via IRCTC well in advance.

Is Rajasthan safe for solo female travellers?

Rajasthan is generally safe for solo women travellers. Tourist areas in Jaipur, Udaipur, and Jodhpur are well-policed and accustomed to international visitors. Dress modestly (cover shoulders and knees at temples), avoid isolated areas after dark, and book accommodation in advance.
