Phuket Travel Guide 2025: Beaches, Islands & What to Actually Do

Beyond Patong Beach — Phi Phi Islands, Phang Nga Bay, Sino-Portuguese Old Town and the best Thai cooking class in Southeast Asia.

Phuket is Southeast Asia's most visited island, which means most visitors see the least interesting part of it — the Patong Beach strip of neon bars and tourist restaurants. The real Phuket is the Sino-Portuguese Old Town, the morning markets, the cooking classes run by people whose families have cooked Thai food for five generations, and the day trips to limestone archipelagos that look like they were designed by someone who had never seen real geography before.

Best Day Trips from Phuket

  • Phi Phi Islands — The most famous day trip. Ko Phi Phi Don for swimming, snorkelling, and the viewpoint. Ko Phi Phi Leh for Maya Bay (The Beach film location). Go on a private speedboat, not the packed slow boat.
  • Phang Nga Bay — The James Bond Island (The Man with the Golden Gun). Limestone karsts rising from emerald water, sea caves, and a Muslim fishing village built entirely on stilts.
  • Similan Islands (October–April) — World-class diving and snorkelling. Day trip by speedboat: $80–100. Best coral in Thailand.
  • Khao Sok National Park (overnight) — Ancient rainforest older than the Amazon. Bamboo huts floating on an emerald lake. 2 hours from Phuket.

Phuket Beyond Patong

  • Phuket Old Town — Sino-Portuguese shophouses, Sunday Walking Street market, excellent coffee at Blue Elephant.
  • Kata and Karon beaches — Quieter than Patong, cleaner water, better surfing.
  • Rawai Beach — No swimming but the best seafood restaurants and the most local beach atmosphere.
  • Khao Rang Hill — Free viewpoint over Phuket Town. Go for sunrise.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time to visit Phuket?

November to April is the dry season — clear skies, calm Andaman Sea, and ideal beach conditions. December to February is peak season (busiest and most expensive). May to October is monsoon — heavy rain and rough seas make swimming dangerous, though prices drop 40–50% and some excellent deals exist. October is transitional and often fine.

Is Phuket good for families?

Phuket is very family-friendly. Patong Beach has a wide range of activities including elephant sanctuaries, ATV tours, and waterparks. Kata and Karon beaches are calmer and more suitable for children than the Patong nightlife zone. Fantasea theme park and Phuket Aquarium are popular family attractions.

Which beach is best in Phuket?

Freedom Beach (secluded, turquoise, no jet skis), Kata Noi (beautiful bay, calm waves, less developed), and Surin Beach (sophisticated, clear water, quieter than Patong) are the most beautiful. Patong has the best facilities and nightlife but is the most crowded. Rawai suits local-style beach days and seafood restaurants.

Do Indians need a visa for Thailand (Phuket)?

Indian ordinary passport holders are covered by Thailand visa-exemption rules for short tourist visits, including Phuket. Bring a return ticket, proof of accommodation and enough funds, and verify the current permitted duration before travel.
