Nepal Travel Guide 2025: Trekking, Kathmandu & the Himalayas

Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Circuit, Pokhara lakeside, and Kathmandu's ancient temples. Nepal is the world's greatest trekking destination — here is how to plan it.

Nepal contains eight of the world's ten highest mountains, including Everest, and is the world's greatest trekking destination by any measure. But Nepal is not only trekking. Kathmandu's Durbar Squares, Pashupatinath Temple (one of Hinduism's holiest sites), the meditative Boudhanath Stupa, the lakeside beauty of Pokhara — Nepal rewards travellers who look beyond the mountain trails.

Nepal Visa for Indians

  • Indian citizens do NOT need a visa for Nepal. Your Indian passport is sufficient for unlimited stay.
  • No permit required for most trekking areas (EBC and Annapurna require trekking permits).
  • Trekking Permits: TIMS card ($20) + National Park permit ($30–50 depending on area).

Kathmandu: What Not to Miss

  • Boudhanath Stupa — One of the largest Buddhist stupas in the world. Walk clockwise with the pilgrims. Dawn or dusk are magical.
  • Pashupatinath Temple — The most important Hindu temple in Nepal. Watch the evening ghats ceremony. Photography respectful rules apply.
  • Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple) — 365 steps to hilltop temple overlooking the valley. The monkeys are aggressive — do not carry food.
  • Thamel neighbourhood — Backpacker hub, outdoor gear, restaurants, night market. The best gear is fake but excellent quality at 10% of Western prices.
  • Patan Durbar Square — Better preserved than Kathmandu Durbar Square, fewer crowds, extraordinary medieval architecture.

Pokhara is Nepal's second city and the gateway to the Annapurna range. Wake at 4:30am and take a taxi to Sarangkot — at 5:30am, if it is clear, the entire Annapurna massif illuminates gold above the mist. It is one of Asia's great natural spectacles and it is free.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Indians need a visa for Nepal?

No. Indian passport holders do not need a visa for Nepal and can stay indefinitely. Entry is free. You don't even need a passport — a valid Indian voter ID, Aadhaar, or government-issued photo ID is sufficient for Indians entering Nepal.

What is the best time to visit Nepal?

October–November is the best time for trekking — clear post-monsoon skies, excellent mountain views, and mild temperatures. March–May (spring) is the second-best window and the best time for Everest Base Camp due to climbing season. December–February is cold but clear at altitude. Monsoon (June–September) floods trails and clouds views.

How much does the Everest Base Camp trek cost?

The EBC trek costs approximately ₹40,000–80,000 for a guided, teahouse-based 14-day trek from Lukla — including flights from Kathmandu to Lukla (~₹12,000 each way), permits, guide, and accommodation. Solo budgeted trekkers can do it for less, but guides and porters are strongly recommended.

Is Nepal safe for tourists?

Nepal is very safe for tourists, including solo travellers. The main risks are altitude sickness on high treks, rare road accidents on mountain highways, and petty theft in Thamel (Kathmandu's tourist hub). Trek only with registered guides, respect altitude acclimatisation schedules, and register with TIMS before trekking.
