Coorg Travel Guide 2025: India's Scotland in Karnataka

Coffee plantations, misty hills, waterfalls, home stays and the world's best filter coffee. Coorg is India's most underrated weekend destination.

Coorg (officially Kodagu) is the coffee-growing district of Karnataka, tucked into the Western Ghats at 1,000–1,700 metres. Called "the Scotland of India" for its misty hills, rushing streams, and green landscapes, it receives some of India's highest rainfall and produces some of Asia's finest Arabica coffee. For weekenders from Bangalore (5 hours) and Chennai (6 hours), it is the default answer to "I need mountains and I need them this weekend."

Top Things to Do in Coorg

  • Coffee plantation tour — Most home stays and resorts offer free tours of their own estates. Watch the picking, drying, and processing process. Buy directly from the estate at wholesale prices.
  • Nagarhole National Park — One of India's best tiger reserves, bordering Coorg. Full day jeep safari ₹2,500–4,000. Also excellent for elephants, leopards, and wild dogs.
  • Abbey Falls — 70-metre waterfall most beautiful in post-monsoon (September–November). ₹30 entry.
  • Raja's Seat, Madikeri — The former maharaja's garden with the best sunset view over the Coorg valleys. Free.
  • Iruppu Falls and Brahmagiri Trek — The best trek in Coorg. 8km return through shola forest to a stunning waterfall.
  • Dubare Elephant Camp — Ethical elephant camp on the Cauvery River. Morning bathing session with elephants. ₹1,500.

Best Time to Visit Coorg

SeasonMonthsExperience
Post-MonsoonSep–NovWaterfalls at peak, lush green, fewer crowds. Best overall.
WinterDec–FebCool, pleasant, coffee harvest season. Most popular.
SummerMar–MayWarm but manageable. Good for trekking before heat.
MonsoonJun–AugVery heavy rain, some roads impassable. Leeches. Avoid unless you love dramatic monsoon.

The best coffee experience in Coorg: stay at a working coffee estate home stay, wake up at 6am when the estate is silver with mist, drink filter coffee made from beans picked the previous day on the estate's own bushes. This is better than any café in the world.
