Best Time to Visit Thailand 2025: Weather, Islands and Month-by-Month Guide

The practical month-by-month guide to Thailand weather — when to visit Bangkok, Phuket, Krabi, Chiang Mai and Koh Samui, plus monsoon mistakes to avoid.

Thailand is not one weather story. Bangkok can be hot and clear while Phuket is stormy; Koh Samui can be sunny when the Andaman coast is rough. The right month depends on whether your trip is temple-heavy, island-heavy or built around northern Thailand.

Best Time for Phuket and Krabi

For Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi and the Andaman coast, November to April is best. May to October brings stronger currents, red flags and more cancelled speedboat trips. If the beach is the point of the holiday, do not gamble on September.

Planning the Andaman coast? Compare Phuket and Krabi before choosing dates.

Best Time for Koh Samui

Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao sit in the Gulf of Thailand and follow a different rhythm. February to September is generally workable, with July and August often better here than on the Phuket side. October and November are usually the wettest months.

Best Time for Chiang Mai

November to February is beautiful in Chiang Mai: cooler mornings, clear mountain light and excellent walking weather. Avoid the worst of burning season, usually late February to April, if air quality is a concern.

See temples, cafes and day trips in the Chiang Mai travel guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best month to visit Thailand?

November and February are the best overall months because the weather is usually dry, seas are calmer and prices are lower than the Christmas-New Year peak.

When is monsoon season in Thailand?

Most of Thailand sees monsoon conditions from May to October, but the Gulf islands such as Koh Samui often have better weather during parts of this period. September is usually one of the wettest months.

Is December a good time to visit Thailand?

December is one of the best weather months for Thailand, especially Bangkok, Phuket and Krabi. It is also one of the most expensive months, so book hotels and domestic flights early.

When should I avoid Phuket?

Avoid Phuket from September to early October if your trip depends on beaches, snorkelling and island tours. Seas can be rough, speedboats may cancel and red-flag beach days are common.
